The Summer King

The Summer King is an opera in two acts on the life of Josh Gibson. It was composed between 2003 and 2011, and orchestrated between 2013 and 2014.  A full production of the opera has not yet taken place, though the work has garnered some significant press attention and will receive its concert world premiere with orchestra on May 8, 2014, in Portland, Maine. UPDATE (December 2013): Daniel Sonenberg and the University of Southern Maine have been awarded a National Endowmen for the Arts grant of $15,000 towards the May 8th premiere of The Summer King at Merrill Auditorium, presented by Portland Ovations. 

The Summer King was featured on Opera America's New Works Forum on January 15, 2014, in a series of events including a libretto reading, and performances of three scenes in both piano-vocal and orchestral format. These performances are presented by American Opera Projects, who have supported the development of this opera since its inception. 

UPDATE (June 2013): The Summer King will receive its concert World Premiere as the Finale to Portland Ovations 2013-14 season. The concert performance will take place on May 8, 2014, at Portland's historic and beautiful Merrill Auditorium.  Tickets are available now to Portland Ovations members, and on June 24, 2013 to the general public.
